Why Tea Tastes Bitter—and 7 Ways to Fix It

Why Tea Tastes Bitter—and 7 Ways to Fix It - Vitorious

You buy a beautiful loose-leaf blend, make the first cup and get something harsh, flat or aggressively bitter. Before deciding you dislike the tea, check the brewing process.

Small preparation changes can completely change the cup. Here are seven places to look.

1. Use less leaf

More tea does not automatically mean more flavour. Past a certain point it can simply make the brew dense and unbalanced. Start with the preparation guidance on the pouch, then adjust gradually.

2. Shorten the steep

If your first cup is too intense, reduce the steeping time before changing everything else. A minute can make a noticeable difference.

3. Watch the water temperature

Very hot water can be unforgiving with blends that include tea leaves. If a green-tea-based blend tastes rough, letting freshly boiled water cool briefly before pouring can produce a softer result.

4. Give the leaves room

Loose leaf needs water to circulate around it. A tightly packed infuser can restrict that movement. Use an infuser with enough space for the ingredients to open.

A simple option is the Vitorious stainless-steel tea strainer, which keeps preparation straightforward without turning your kitchen into a tea laboratory.

5. Do not judge a blend while it is scorching hot

Let the cup cool for a few minutes. Aroma and sweetness can become easier to notice once the drink is no longer too hot to taste comfortably.

6. Adjust one variable at a time

If you change the leaf amount, water temperature and steep time all at once, you will not know what fixed the problem. Treat the next cup like a small experiment: change one thing, taste, then refine.

7. Accept that preference matters

Sometimes the brew is technically fine and the flavour family simply is not yours. A floral drinker may not love tart berries. A citrus person may find rose too perfumed. That is useful information, not a brewing failure.

The goal is not to make tea “correctly” according to someone else. It is to find a repeatable method that makes your cup taste good.
